Vol. 3, Issue 68, October 23, 2009
From the Desk of the Diva
In this week's issue:
It's snowing outside while I sit here plucking away and reflecting on another week in Divaland. Much of my heart and soul in the last few months has gone into creating W.I.S.H.: The Women's International Summit for Health. While there are still quite a few things to tweak and adjust on this site, I figure you're family, so take a peek and see what we're up to. You can sign up for it, but for juicy details on the content of the calls, we have secrets still to share, so stay tuned. It's been an extraordinarily empowering journey preparing for this event. People who once felt "out of reach" are now calling us up at home and sharing their very best wisdom and inspiration with us so we can share it with you. When you see the line-up of speakers we've gathered for this event, you'll agree that this summit is going to be unforgettable. Staring on November 30th, for 9 days, we'll be inviting you (and everyone else you know and love) to join us for the biggest empowerment party for women the world has ever seen. We'll cover everything from orgasms to organics, spirituality to spunky outfits. I get giddy just thinking about what this event is going to do for women, so I do hope you'll sign up and join us.
As Halloween approaches, watch out for those bowls of caramels and lollipops! Thanksgiving is just around the corner, so pace yourself! In order to give you some extra support throughout the holidays and help you gear up for the season of mashed potatoes and gravy, Dr. Ritamarie Loscalzo and I will be offering a series of myth-busting teleseminars on the most common health conditions out there. We'll cover Candida, leaky gut, autoimmune disorders like psoriasis and excema. We'll discuss your colon, your cellulite and all in an attempt to gear you up for the release of our most complete rejuvenation program ever happening in January 2010. We'll put you on the list and send you details about our upcoming calls very soon! If you know anyone suffering from the above-mentioned conditions, please let them know about these calls! They will be life-changing.
This is your last chance to sign up for our Halloween Green Smoothie challenge starting on Monday. I'm also delighted to let you know that the winners of this summer's International Green Smoothie Day event were finally announced on the Green Smoothie Blog, so you can check that out. This week's issue of Health in High Heels is loaded with goodies that I trust you'll find helpful at the end of your busy week!
Love and wintery WISHes,
Tera

Top 3 Mistakes People Make When Cleansing!
Periodic deep cleansing is a desirable thing. You probably do it to your home, your car, even your pets. But chances are, you don’t even think about doing a periodic cleansing of your internal organs.
Throughout the ages, various forms of cleansing have been used to rest, heal and restore mental clarity. Water and juice fasting are among the most rigorous methods. A variety of potions and powders have been developed to cleanse the colon and the liver. The Master Cleanse is one of the more popular cleansing programs of our modern time. Many of these cleansing methods work well. All have advantages and disadvantages. None works perfectly for everyone.
- Give your digestive track a rest.
- Decrease the burden on your liver and gallbladder.
- Improve detoxification.
- Release extra weight, if necessary.
- Increase your energy, as less energy is spent on digestion.
- Reduce your cravings.
- Get you in control of your eating habits.
- Increase the nutrients that are readily available to your body.
- Get you back on track with eating habits if they have gotten out of control.
Benefits of Cleansing
There are so many cleansing programs to choose from, that it can be overwhelming to even get started. Once you get started, it can be even harder to complete.
Here are the 3 most common mistakes that prevent even the most well-intentioned cleanser from completing the program.
Mistake #1: Doing the cleanse all alone.
If your friends are all drinking beer and eating pizza, it’s hard to be the odd one out who’s drinking weird potions and talking about their bowel movements. It’s easy to feel discouraged and frustrated when no one else really understands what you’re doing or why you’re doing it. All too often when you set out to do a cleanse on your own, you get overwhelmed part of the way through and just don’t finish. Or you’re invited to dinner or a birthday party, and you postpone it for a “more convenient time”. The ideal way to do a cleanse is to get out of your own environment and go away to a spa or cleansing retreat, and just dedicate yourself to nothing but self care for a set period of time. But that’s not always practical or affordable.
SOLUTION: Find a mentor or join a cleansing support group, and do the cleanse with others who understand you and can support you through the process.
Mistake #2: Making it too complex
There are lots of different cleansing programs available. Just do a Google search and you’ll see just how many there are. The problem is, most of them are just too complicated and time consuming to do when you lead a busy life. There are all sorts of unusual powders, potions and supplements to take at all different times of the day. Then there are the enemas, mud packs, and all the extra procedures you need to do too. Don’t get me wrong, these procedures are highly effective, and the cleanses that include them do give great results. It’s just that your life is already too busy and complicated. And when the process is too complex, you’re more likely to give up part of the way through, before you’ve fully reaped the benefits. SOLUTION: Choose a cleansing program that’s quick and easy to do –one that saves you time rather that requiring more of it and that fits your schedule rather than you having to totally adjust yours.
Mistake #3: Feeling like you have to starve yourself to really be cleansing
It’s hard to focus at work when you’re blood sugar is low and you have no energy. Some cleanses are so restrictive, that you feel hungry all the time. Water fasting is a great way to cleanse, but it’s hard to lead a busy life and focus on complicated work tasks when you haven’t eaten in days. Water fasting is best left for the “go away and cleanse” programs we talked about earlier, and really should be supervised because it can lead to electrolyte imbalances.
Juice cleanses can also leave you feeling hungry and light headed all the time, and are hard for most people to do for more than a few days. Besides, the quantity of juice required takes a lot of time to make and clean up after. It’s easy to give up when the cleansing process leaves you exhausted and hungry.
SOLUTION: If you need to work and maintain your busy life while cleansing, it’s important that you do a program that’s loaded with nutritionally dense, easy to digest, whole fresh foods, so that you feel energetic rather than hungry all the time. The change of seasons is a great time to do a cleanse. The holidiay season is coming. First the Halloween candies, then Thanksgiving, Christmas dinners and office parties. While you may not be able to resist all the treats that cross your path, I can guarantee you'll start off the new year right by signing up for our 6-Week Deep Tissue Detox.
As a result of over 20 years of experimentation and trying just about every type of cleanse out there, from water fasting to potions, powders and enemas, I’ve learned what works and what doesn't. To learn more about the right kind of cleanses to do for conditions like candida, irritable bowel, crohns, etc., sign up to attend our free series of teleseminars taking place throughout November.
One thing is certain, no matter where you are or how healthy you'd like to be, it all starts with education and informing yourself.

Strength Training isn't Just For Bodybuilders!
by Jenn Givler
When you hear “strength training” what does it make you think of? I
t’s easy to overlook strength training, and feel like we don’t really need it to be healthy. But, the truth is, cardio alone will not help you build a beautiful, strong body.
The benefits of strength or resistance training include:
1. Increasing your lean muscle mass actually increases your metabolism, meaning you burn more calories while working out AND while doing nothing. This means its easier to release weight and excess body fat.
2. Your heart becomes more efficient, which means you’ll have a lower heart rate.
3. Bone density increases giving you stronger bones and reducing your risk of osteoporosis.
4. Tendons and ligaments also become stronger reducing your risk of injury.
5. Strength! You get stronger, you feel better, you feel energized and confident, daily and household tasks become easier.
Resistance training doesn’t have to be done in a gym, and it doesn’t have to be complicated. To add tone to your muscles, you can use light weights (3 to 5 lbs.) or, your own body resistance.
Try this simple routine:
1. Bicep curl and Squat: Stand with feet shoulder width apart, arms straight down in front of your legs. Grip weights, palms face out. Bend at the knees keeping your back straight, as if you’re going to sit in a chair. As you bend at your knees, bend your elbows lifting the weights toward your shoulders. Bend knees about 90 degrees, hands should reach your shoulders. Straighten knees, bring hands back down to starting position. Do 12 to 15 repetitions, 3 sets.
2. Rowing Plie: Stand with feet shoulder width apart, feet slightly turned out. Hold weights, palms face toward you, arms straight. As you bend your knees, keep your back straight, pelvis tilted forward. Bend your elbows bringing the weight up to chest level. Return to standing position, lowering weight. 12 to 15 reps, 3 sets.
3. Lunging shoulder press:
Stand feet together, holding weights at shoulder level palms face in toward your ears. Step one foot out in front of you about 12 inches. Bend at your knees as you raise the weights over your head. Straighten knees, lower weights back to shoulder level. 12 to 15 reps, 3 sets, each leg.
The goal is to spend quality time under tension, not to strain yourself. If you feel strained doing any of these exercises, use lighter weights.
To build muscle, you need to rest just as much as you need the exercise. Your muscles actually get stronger during the recovery. Make sure you leave at least 48 hours between resistance training sessions to allow your muscles to recover.
Doing this routine consistently, and even adding or changing the exercises to your own personal taste, you’ll see results within 2 to 3 weeks.
