The Vital Vittle

kale300Food of the Week:  KALE!

Kale is the first green I really fell in love with.  Not so much because of taste, I'm sad to say-like many of the healthiest greens, kale has a strong flavor that may take a bit of getting used to-but because I felt SO good after my first kale-centric meal.

Five reasons to eat more kale:

1) Get your vitamins and minerals. Kale is an amazing source of several different nutrients:  Vitamins K, A, C, and B6, manganese, copper, calcium, B6, and potassium, among others.

2) Prevent cancer. The phytonutrients in kale and other cruciferous vegetables have been shown to reduce the risk of cancer, including lung, breast, colon, and ovarian cancer.

3) Detoxify your body. In addition to the garden-variety antioxidant benefits of many fruits and vegetables, the phytonutrients in kale actually stimulate extra detoxification.  These compounds trigger increased production of numerous enzymes involved in detoxification, considerably expanding the body's ability to neutralizing damaging free radicals.

4) Protect your eyesight. Kale contains carotenoids, which help prevent UV damage to the eyes and reduce the risk of cataracts.

5) Have more energy. Kale is good source of manganese, which helps produce energy from protein and carbohydrates.  It also helps protect the mitochondria, the cells' power source, against damage from free radicals generated during energy production.

Ways to sneak more kale into your diet:

If you haven't yet completely developed a taste for the more savory greens, kale is a good place to start.  Add a leaf or two into your morning smoothie for an extra energy kick, or shred a bit into your evening salad.  Or, for total immersion, try this tasty salad recipe from Alissa Cohen's Living on Live Food:

Kale Salad

1 bunch of kale, shredded (discard the woody stems)

1 cup diced tomatoes

1 cup avocado

2-½ T olive oil

1-½ T lemon juice

1 t sea salt

½ t cayenne pepper

Using your hands, toss the ingredients together, squeezing to cream the avocado.

Hint: The more avocado you use, the richer and creamier (and, frankly, tastier) this salad gets.

So in honor of kale, I challenge you all to learn to love it (if you don't already).  Try eating a serving of kale every day for a week and pay attention to how you feel-I promise you'll be a kale convert!

How to Save Money on your Grocery Bill

By Doll Creelman

istock grocery listThis question takes a prominent position in many household budgets these days. Many of us have leafed through the circulars and flyers, cut the coupons and kept an eagle eye for that special bargain.

If you're like me, you search frantically at the checkout looking for said coupons in total dismay when you realize that the pile still sits on the kitchen table.

Yes, we've all done this but perhaps the real question is this, "How do we purchase healthy foods and stay within our allocated budget?"

The Objectives:

  • Buy fresh, wholesome food, preferable organic when possible
  • Stay within specified dollar amount for that trip
  • Arrive home with a smile on our face knowing that all will reap the benefits.

The Plan:

  • Purchase only what is needed
  • Watch for sale items that fit within your family's needs
  • Know your store (where do they place the ripe fruit and vegetables that are marked down)
  • Use coupons for only those items that you would normally purchase
  • Stick with your list
  • Look beyond your eye level (lower priced items are often closer to the floor)

And so we begin. I like to keep our home "green" and so have all the local flyers delivered to my inbox. After looking through those stores that I choose to shop at I make my list. Most of the online flyers even have an option to create a shopping list online.

There are a couple of things to keep in mind:

1. The distance to drive to the stores (how much fuel do we really want to burn or how many bus stops will this trip take)

2. Will the larger quantities really show savings in the long run?

A really good shopper will check the price per gram or ounce to compare. Sometimes those larger boxes are really not that much cheaper.

Here's a trick I've used for many years:

I figure out how much I can spend for the week for groceries. (for example: $100.00) From that I deduct $20 that I would use for sale items, lost leaders etc that had not been planned for. The remaining $80.00 is used for the actual list. These days I'm spending the bulk of this on fresh fruits, vegetables and nuts. I do have some meat in the freezer but since I'm moving towards a more vegetarian table I'm not adding to this inventory. Also, prepackaged foods, although can be a convenience, are often more expensive than putting the items together yourself. Besides, how many of us really need the extras that are put in the box.

If I choose to shop for specifically over-ripe fruit and veggies then I would divide the amount to spend into the number of times I would go to the store. When eating fresh sometimes it means more frequent trips. These can be dangerous if you are not on top of your finances so, if it's tough, I would suggest only once a week.

Here's the biggest way to save at the grocery store:

Put back the unhealthy snack foods, sodas, sugary cereals etc. I'm sure you all know what I mean. Actually, I've found that if I don't run back to the store each day to get these "fun" foods that my left over cash grows!

To sum it up, I've been told many times that it's an art to manage the lack of money. I suppose this is true. When we've had critical times and cash flow was limited we were always able to make ends meet. Knowing is half the battle: know how much and where it's going. You might just be pleasantly surprised at the amount saved!

Hoodies, Anyone?

By Shayla Roberts

diva-hoodieThis winter, have you found yourself  just hanging around the house, checking email or drinking a chilly green smoothie, and wished you had something warm and snuggly to wear?   Or...you know how when you're shopping in the refrigerated produce section, you get goosebumps no matter WHAT the weather's like outside?  Wouldn't it be nice to have an article of clothing lighter than a coat, warmer than a tshirt, and easy to pull on and off?  Maybe something with a hat?

Hmm....

I've got it!!  How about a hoodie?  Oooh, it could be a DIVA hoodie, with a pretty logo, and raspberries, and it could be available in a few different colors....

Something like what you'll find, say...HERE.

Introducing the Berrylicious Diva Hoodies at The Raw Divas Cafepress shop.  We have the original Berrylicious Diva Hoodie that features a relaxed/casual fit, standard women's sizing, and comes in light pink and heather grey.  There's also the Berrylicious Diva Hoodie, v. 2.0 that has a  sexy, fitted look going on, and comes in white.  Make sure to check out the graphics on the front AND back of the shirts!

diva-bagAlso, by popular demand (or, because one person asked us to) we've now designed a standard sweatshirt for those of you who don't want to mess up your ‘do with a hood.  PLEASE NOTE that these are Hanes standard MEN'S sizing, so you might want to look at the product sizing info in the listing, or raid your hubby's closet to see if you can find anything to compare it to.  The general consensus is size down 1 size, but your mileage may vary!

There are also some other goodies, like Tote Bags and Mugs.  Anything else you'd like to see, just drop us a line!  We take requests.

So what are you waiting for?  Go and order, and sport your Raw Diva status while keeping warm this winter.
